Once a month, for the last three years, about 50 volunteers put their muscles to work making up bags of food for hundreds of needy people that come to the Crosspoint Ministries food give away held the first Saturday of each month.
Over the past eight months, the average number of families who have received food from this give away is 135 families (households), which represents 1,877 adults and 1,029 children receiving an average of 70 lbs. of food per family. The church has used $6,876.50 over the past eight months from their tithes for purchasing food from the Arkansas Food Bank. Other food is donated by Wal-Mart of Searcy, Wal-Mart Distribution - Searcy, and the Outlet Store in Beebe. This past Saturday, 192 families were served, representing 556 people, according to Bro. Bo Hines.
For those in need, you do not have to qualify to receive food from the Crosspoint Ministries food give away. However, Crosspoint also distributes some U.S.D.A. food which requires you to meet income requirements and you cannot be receiving other U.S.D.A. food from food stamps or W.I.C.
Crosspoint also has a clothing store which has used clothing donated from various sources. There are clothes for children and adults. As the people gather out front, they fill out forms and then are admitted to the church where they all enter the main sanctuary and there is a short sermon with music and interactive time. Then the people are allowed to go shop in the clothes store if they want. Then volunteers from the church load all the grocery items into the recipients vehicles.
This past Saturday, Sept. 5, the items in the sacks which people did not have to qualify for included: Popcorn, Stove Top stuffing, Sunflower Seeds, Canned Vegetables, Pasta/Noodle/Potatoes, Canned Meat Product, Seasoning or Staple, Glad Steaming Bag, Shaving Cream, Cookie/Cracker/Chips, Bread, Cereal, Stretch Fruit Snack, Peanut Butter Crackers, Cookie/Snack, Canned Fruit, Coffee/Tea/Creamer or soup, Spicy Mustard, Slim Jim, Airborne Cold Medicine, Box Meals, 1-6-pack soft drink, 10-bottle water, 2-juice or power drink, Manwich Sloppy Joe, Ground Turkey, Sausage Links, Misc. Frozen Meat, Individual Frozen Pizza, Starbuck Rolls, Eggs - 2 dozen, Misc. Fridge - Yogurt or Juice, Misc. Pastry, Pancho Cheese Dip, Watermelon, and Milk.
The U.S.D.A. food included: 10-lbs. Cheddar Cheese, Tomato Juice, Beef Stew, Northern Beans, Instant Dry Milk, Canned Tuna, Orange Juice, Spaghetti - plus one from the following: sausage, ham or chicken. These are typical items which are included in the bags each month.
